Mulai mendalami tarian Jawa dan pecak silat sejak berumur 7 tahun, nama Eko Supriyanto telah menjadi sinonim dengan dunia seni tari Indonesia. Lulusan ISI Surakarta dan pemegang gelar Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in Choreography and Performance dari UCLA telah menebarkan karya-karyanya di dunia antara lain di American Dance Festival, APPEX, ACDFA, Highway Performance Space, The Getty Museum, Lincoln Center, dan Japan American Theater. Eko Supriyanto juga adalah salah satu penari utama untuk tur “Drowned World” Madonna dan konsultan tari untuk pementasan Los Angeles and National Tour of Broadway Musical “Lion King” karya Julie Taymor.
“Onrop! Musikal” adalah kolaborasi pertamanya dengan Joko Anwar.
Dengan jam terbang dan prestasi yang mengagumkan, atau juga mengintimidasi, Eko adalah seseorang yang humble, dan humoris. Dengan “Onrop! Musikal”, Eko menjanjikan sebuah karya yang indah dan fun.
Eko is a graduated and full-time faculty member of ISI Surakarta/The Indonesian Institute for the Arts in Solo, Central Java Indonesia. Eko holds a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in Choreography and Performance from the UCLA Department of World Arts and Cultures (2001). He has studied Javanese court dances and the Indonesian Martial Art Pencak Silat since he was seven with his grandfather in Magelang, Central Java. Eko’s works have been presented widely in Indonesia, the United States (American Dance Festival 1997, APPEX 1997, 1999 & 2000, ACDFA, Highways Performance Space, The Getty Museum, Lincoln Center and Japan American Theatre), Asia and Europe. Eko was a featured dancer on Madonna’s “Drowned World” tour in 2001 and has served as a dance consultant for the Los Angeles and National Tour of Julie Taymor’s “Lion King” Broadway production. He is the founder and artistic director for Solo Dance Studio in Surakarta Indonesia since 1996. Recently he danced and choreographed for Peter Sellars and John Adam’s Opera “Flowering Tree”, performed at the “New Crowned Hope 250 Years” Mozart Festival in Vienna in 2006, with the Berlin Philharmonic under Sir Simon Ratle, The San Francisco Symphony, the Barbican Centre in London in July 2007, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and the Lincoln Center in New York in 2009. Eko is an actor, dancer and choreographer for the “Opera Jawa” film (2006) directed by Garin Nugroho, music by Rahayu Supanggah and produced by Peter Sellars. He dance and choreographed for The Iron Bed and Opera Jawa the Opera, directed by Garin Nugroho at the Theatre Spectacle, Zurich Switzerland (August 2008) and the Indonesian Dance Festival (October 2008), Jakarta Indonesia and Tropen Museum Amsterdam September 2010. He choreographed a film Anak-anak Borobudur by Arswendo Atmowilopo and “Generasi Biru” directed by Garin Nugroho and John De-rantau with Indonesian famous Rock Band SLANK. He was Invited for MAU Forum and dancing for Lemi Ponifasio’s “Tempest” at the Auckland Festival New Zealand and Premiering his new work “Possible Dewa Ruci at the Festival De L’imaginaire in Paris France March 2009. He was performing and touring with Lemi Ponifasio’s Tempest in Australia and Europe in 2010 produced by Threatre De LAville Paris. In July 2010, Eko will choreographing a Musical Diana for 45th Kompas in July 2010. Eko received a Fulbright Scholarship Grant to pursue a PhD degree at UCLA in Fall and Winter 2007. He is now a third year Doctorate student of the Performance Studies at the Gadjah Mada University Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
Eko’s research interests in reinvestigating practice on Javanese dances on to contemporary dances; to collaborate within his journey of tradition versus modern, pop culture, film and cross cultural collaboration. His depth exploration, depth commitment and highly creation, for his dance vocabularies on his new languages scholar and artistic transformation. With his cross cultural instincts from his ethnic origin in Kalimantan/Borneo where he was born and his native Magelang folk dance, combining with a new translation of the classical/court Javanese dance, he intended to enter on all new situation and to learn, grow from the traditional value while being willing to engage directly with contemporary realities.
